New MAZDA Iconic SP Concept Debuts

The Mazda Iconic SP Concept, an electrified roadster, recently made its debut before the kickoff of the 2023 Tokyo Auto Show. This concept vehicle previewed some interesting new technology we might be able to expect from electrified new Mazda models in the future, and all of us here at Paretti Mazda of Covington were excited to see it for ourselves.

An Electric Powertrain

The Mazda Iconic SP Concept is powered by an as-yet-unknown number of electric engines and a twin-rotor rotary engine. Unlike the Mazda CX-90 PHEV, which can be plugged in, this model’s driving range is extended as the rotary engine charges the battery.

Bigger Than a MAZDA Miata

Some expected the Mazda Iconic SP to be a new take on the Mazda Miata, but it’s roughly 10 inches longer and four inches wider than the iconic roadster, gaining about 850 pounds of curb weight in the process. While this is not a major difference, it is noticeable.

A Surprising Amount of Power

If you associate hybrids with uninspired driving and low engine output, this green concept might surprise you. In its current form, the Mazda Iconic SP Concept produces up to 365 horsepower, which is a considerable amount in such a small and light vehicle.
